ARS Electronica Festival to Kick-off With A Bang (Video)
If I had no budgetary and time constraints it would be fantastic to jaunt around the world experiencing all the fantastic technology, robot and science exhibitions I could find. Number one on my personal wish list, at least at the moment, would be the Ars Electronica Festival, scheduled for August 31st through September 6th, in Linz, Austria.
The long running festival goes back to September, 1979 when it was originally staged as a "pilot project was designed to take the Digital Revolution’s emergence as an occasion to face important questions about the future and to focus these inquiries on the nexus of ART, TECHNOLOGY and SOCIETY."

People, especially kids growing up, respond emotionally to role models. They see through the rules, regulations, and official words, and respond directly to people they respect, admire, and want to be like. You can lecture them all day, and all night, and never convince them that studying science and technology is 'cool' and that they should dedicate themselves to a career in robotics.
But, what if major personalities, the most popular and well known rock stars, people like Miley Cyrus, Wi.i.am, Britney Spears, Snoop Dog, Jack Black, and even heart throb Justin Bieber, delivered the same, positive, compelling message about studying technology to make a difference?
We're about to find out...

Robot One Man Band Hams It Up Big Time (Video)

Robots can be much more than just rock'em sock'em or humanoid kung-fu robot fighters. They can also be creative, exciting, musical, and even a little crazy - or even crazy to the extreme. Take a look at Tim Laursen's extreme performance in the video below plus a recent episode of Make: Live with Laursen explaining more about his robot creations.

Robot Plays the Thermin Interactively (Video)
More years ago than we care to remember, we hand loaded an assembly language program called "Music of a Sort" written by Steve Dompier into an Intel 8080 based processor then carefully positioned a transistor radio so that it would pickup the electrical noise generated as the program executed. By changing the values to be sorted different frequencies were generated, and everyone was amazed to hear really horrible classical music issuing from the radio speakers.
Now, decades later, researchers have been able to creatively program not only computers but also humanoid robots, so that they can follow the music played by other performers and play along, matching them chord for chord and note for note.

Electronic music, especially hand-made electronic musical instruments, may not be "robotic" in the strict definition of the word, but they are still fascinating and a lot of fun, as we found out Sunday night.
Check out this hand made music video we took at the event for a small taste of what it possible.
