Robot Tsunami Continues

While catching up on our backlog of reading over the weekend, we ran across an interesting article via Robomedia2010. The article covers the Embedded Technology RoboCon (robot competition), which is interesting enough by itself. But, what really caught our eye was this striking graph:

Robocon teams

The left axis and blue line correspond to the number of participants while the right axis and bars indicate the number of teams entered. In 2002, it’s initial year, the competition drew 20 teams with roughly 100 participants.

The really surprising factor, at least to us, was that the number of teams has consistently grown, year after year, inspite of the world, and Japan, economic downturn and marginal depression. By the 2009 competition, there were 354 teams taking the field, with close to 1,700 team members.
