Nao Maru’s King Kizer series of robots have always been impressive, even going back to his first generation design, which was a modified Kondo KHR-1 humanoid. Competition after competition, year after year, Maru keeps surprising and delighting ROBO-ONE fans, and taking home so many trophies and metals that he might have to build a special wing to his home.

Most robot developers tend to specialize in a very narrow area of expertise. They may excel at mechanical design, dynamics, sensing, software optimization, or autonomous operation, but tend to be weak in other areas. But occasionally someone comes along that excels in several critical disciplines at the same time, and their robot designs are always a force to be reckoned with.

Keepon robot makes a big impression at IREX (Video)

Marek Michalowski, one of the Keepon robot developers and a co-founder of BeatBots was really enthused by the response at IREX, and the feeling was definitely mutual. The Keepon exhibit was constantly surrounded by fans that were obviously entranced by the cute little robots ability to recognize, track, and interact with them using its body language and movement.

While the main ROBO-ONE competitions have very strict rules, the ROBO-ONE Gran Prix series tends to be a lot more flexible, and more fun. It’s not unusual to find some pretty hilarious David and Golaith match-ups, like the one pictured above from the ROBO-ONE Gran Prix matches at IREX 2009.

Although the attendance was obviously down slightly due to the economy and industry restructuring, IREX 2009 was still active, energetic, and jam-packed with tons of robot goodness. We spend several days taking photos & videos, interviewing exhibitors & fans, introducing companies to potential partners, and just having a total blast.
