Space Polution Of A Different Sort

Lightyears

A really cool graphical representation of what other civilizations may be watching, assuming they are interested enough to pick up and monitor our TV signals.

It’s pretty frightening to think that they might believe our civilization is like the Munsters, or the Brady Bunch. But, the even scarier thought is that after the digital transition we’ll go dark and they’ll be convinced that we must have finally blown ourselves to kingdom come.

  1. I wouldn’t worry about it — studies have shown that our TV signals (even in their heyday) become indistinguishable from cosmic noise well before they reach even Alpha Centauri.

Also, I’ve studied the Fermi paradox pretty extensively, and concluded that either there’s nobody else out there, or we’re living in a nature preserve (and in that case, our keepers know very well that we’re still here, and are still choosing to hide from us). The odds of there being somebody else out there with the ability to pick up radio signals, but who hasn’t already settled the whole galaxy millions of years ago, are ridiculously low.
