Designed based on the image of a 3?4 year old, the RobotCub (iCub) humanoid robot baby project is really intriquing. At the same time, it’s open-source approach may trigger concerns about safety and security, not to mention the potential ‘uncanny valley’ aspects of the robot.
The five year RobotCub project, funded by the European Commission is focused on studying cognition, and has drawn active participation from researchers around the world.
The robot child incorporates 53 degrees of freedom, has fully articulated hands, head, and even eyes. The project uses an open systems platform that other researchers are encouraged to utilize, customize, and improve upon.
