Master/Slave Robotic Control System Used For New Henson Series (Video)

robot

We're great fans of master/slave control systems for robotics, especially for humanoids like the rigs used for some ROBO-ONE champions. Of course, those rigs are home-made by hobbyists on a limited budget. So it was interesting, and a little awesome, to see what professionals can do with big budgets and access to the latest technology.

Jim Henson's Creature Shop, famous for the Muppets and a whole string of preschool productions like "Fraggle Rock and Muppet Babies, put together the ultimate master/slave system called the "Henson Digital Performance Studio" (video below), and has put it to good use in creating "Sid the Science Kid" - a new series that will debut on PBS this fall.

For an overview of how the system works, check out the Wall Street Journal "Digital Puppetry" article, and download the Henson Digital Puppetry Studio information pdf file.
