'Half-Size' Micromouse Competitions

Robot

This is the 28th year that micromouse competitions have been annually held in Japan. The 2007 All Japan Micromouse event, scheduled for November 16-18, 2007 in Tsukuba, will follow basically the same structure and rules as past events.

At the same time, the Japan New Technology Foundation Micromouse Committee wants to inject some additional energy and interest into the competitions, and has announced that both larger (real world size)  and smaller ('half-size') micromouse challenges will be staged in the future to complement the standard scale events.

We visited RT Corp in Akihabara yesterday afternoon to get a first hand look at the plans for the challenging half-size competitions.

Going on two years ago, we put out the challenge for someone to hack together Elmo and the Robosapien. The popular Robosapien at the time was the V2, but since then the RS Media, with it's personality editor capability has come out and has been just pleading for someone to do an Elmo-Sapien.

Well, we're happy to report that 'someone' just did....

ROBO-ONE 12: Playing Catch (Video)

robot

As a kind of robotic 'stretch goal' intended to motivate ROBO-ONE builders to really apply their skills and test the limits of their ability, each of the major ROBO-ONE competitions has one or two special theme challenges.

For ROBO-ONE 12, held recently in Takamatsu, Japan, the most interesting theme challenge was to have your robot 'play catch'. As usual, the results were mixed, with some builders doing really well - excellent actually (see below), some doing not so well, and some that felt that the challenge was beyond them at this point.

i-SOBOT Sighted in the Wild (Video)

Robot
i-SOBOT has been listed as available for pre-order on quite a few sites in the US including Neiman Marcus, Amazon, Toys 'r Us, and others. We've also heard rumors that some customers already have firm delivery commitments as early as later this week.

So it wasn't a big surprise when we ran across two brand new i-SOBOT videos (see below) on YouTube.
