A few weeks ago we posted about the NTT Communications shopping robot "proof of concept" testing taking place in Fukuoka with live volunteer shoppers. Now 'buru' has given us the opportunity to take a closer look at the robots, and the technology behind them.
Our first impressions? The shopping robots are much bigger than we imagined - think of a bank ATM machine that has slipped its moorings. Navigation/location is determined by a grid of RFID tags hidden under the mall carpeting. And, we're assuming, the large red buttons on the top of the robots are the emergency "STOP!".
