Do It Yourself Robotics?

My brother spent a couple of weeks visiting us here in Japan last month, and caught the robotics bug. Now, safely back home in the States, he's on the look-out for anything that even comes close to resembling a robot. Last night he wrote to us bubbling over about a robot show on the DIY network.

Although we can't watch it on our Japanese cable network, we're going to trust his judgment and the information on the DIY Network website, and say that it is something really worth checking out.

The basic program format looks like a robot clone of one of our long time favorites - Junkyard Wars. Two teams of engineering students are assigned an 'expert' and presented with a robot design challenge. They have a limited amount of time to come up with a design, scrounge up all the parts, assemble and then test their robot creation. At the end of the day there's a match to see which robot wins.

Apparently this fun has been going on for awhile since there are quite a few programs listed in the Robot Rivals episode guide. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll have much luck convincing our cable provider to broadcast it.  But, if you have a chance to watch it, please let us know what you think.
