We’ve always been a little skeptical about the possibility of robots playing sports like soccer. It’s not that we don’t think it would be interesting, but rather that we have always thought that the technology just wasn’t in place yet to make it happen. Maybe, just maybe, we’ve been wrong. . .
During the recent robot exhibition in Akihabara, the electronics district of Tokyo, we had the chance to watch a couple of Aibo robot dogs doing a simple robot soccer demonstration. The red dog played goalee, while the blue Aibo kept trying to score.
All things considered, the play turned out to be a lot more interesting than we imagined. The Aibos did execute some good soccer moves and blocks, and although they did loose track of the ball from time to time, for the most part they did a pretty good job.
