Robot Sumo Photos – All Japan Tournament (Kanto 2005)

The official numbers for yesterday’s All Japan Robot Sumo Kanto regional competition included 129 autonomous robots and 156 that used remote controls for a total of 285 entries. For this preliminary event, all the competitors were high school age with 77 teams fielded by high schools in the Kanto area and 208 that were sponsored by other organizations including major companies like Hitachi, Casio, and IBM Japan.

Compared to a similar US robotics event, one thing that was immediately noticeable was that all the competitors wore the de-facto Japanese high school student white shirt and dark slacks. The arena floor was laid out with 8 sumo rings, four on one side dedicated to autonomous robot battles and the four on the other side used for competitions between the remote controlled robots.

Videos taken Saturday that feature actual competitions will be posted on Robot’s Dreams within the next day or two.
